ashtanga 101

Ashtanga yoga is a system of poses set in a specific order. the core intent of Ashtanga Yoga is to detoxify the body , build muscular strength + increase range of motion and restore proper functioning of the digestive system.

the method we teach links together even breathing, and a steady gaze to bring focus into the practice. we aim to (over time) link the breath + the movement together to create a fluid, meditative practice.

the bread and butter of Ashtanga Yoga are Mysore Style classes. This is where we do the bulk of the learning. Read more below!

mysore style

Mysore classes share their namesake with their birthplace of Mysore, India. Mysore style is the traditional method of practicing Ashtanga Yoga and is adaptable to anyone interested and willing to learn. Students practice together in the same room, however everyone moves at their own pace, receives individualized instruction from the teacher, and progresses through the series of postures at a pace that works for the individual.

In Mysore style practice, the sequencing of postures is memorized slowly over time, with new postures added as the student progresses. This style works to help flex the brain + create a strong foundation to build your yoga practice. This means, the first few day or weeks student will be doing “less” postures than a typical yoga class, but you will be taking the reins on your own learning process. however, you’re never doing this alone. Our trained teaching staff will be right by your side to support you, regardless of experience level and memorization style.

Mysore style Ashtanga is one of the most effective ways to learn and integrate a personalized practice that can be a tool to support you through every season of your life.
